A huge party on the occasion of the film premier of András B. Vágölogyi's Kolorádó Kid dedicated to the Hungarian revolution in 1956. The night will feature well known underground musicians, who played roles in the film. Check out the Qualitons who are one of the bands featured tonight playing the best of funk, soul, and beat-music from the Hungarian 60s and 70s... Ah - the forgotten gems of this era! They are bursting with energy, humour and unique time travelling into the socialist funk of the mysterious epoch!

Also worth a gander...

Üllöi Úti Fuck (Concert)
Szabad az Á [map], 21:00, 800 Ft
Maybe some of us haven't been here long enough but I was incredibly surprised when I had a look at Üllöi Úti Fuck's myspace and they were incredibly happy-go-lucky. Though we haven't seen them live they have been together since the late 80s and have a pretty good reputation.

Vágtázo Életerő (VHK) (Concert)
Dürer-kert [map] 20:00, 2400 Ft and 2900 Ft (at the door)
This world famous band is putting today's hardcore scene to shame. They apparently are reminiscent of dragons, Hungarian and Chinese folk tale motifs all combined together with the power of the "prime tornado". Nice?!

Ninjabreakz pres: Break 2 Bass Session (Club)
Kuplung, FREE
Djs from Hungary and the Czech including: Fever, Swann-H, Le Spectre, Kueger, Pryus, and Psyon.

Actress Zsa-zsa Gabor, probably most famous in her role as "Angry Woman Who Slaps A Cop", was born in our fair city on this day in 1917. She is now 92, and rumor has it she'll be stepping out tonight. If you want to avoid an altercation with the Grumpy Néni Supreme, try one of these hideouts.

Antropos.hu Electro Night (Party)
Kuplung, 6th February, Free
Király utca 46 [map]
Pest Centre, VI, Király utca (T4/6), 5 min

Have you seen Kuplung lately? You really should. It looks like a Whole New World and Antropos.hu, the Hungarian cultural magazine, invites you to pop in tonight. Free is the key to this party - no cover, and when you get tired of dancing your little cotton socks off, you can take a ten-minute breather with the folks from PLUSS Alapítvány - the HIV/AIDS support organization is offering free and anonymous tests on site. Spinning you right round will be Lollipop DJs Sakal and Killbert, then DJs Pedro and Geri of Robotrock will set you fidgeting. Eye candy courtesy of Praxinoscope of Antropos.

Jam Session: America's Jazz Ambassadors embrace the world (Exhibition)
MUPA
[map], daily to 18 February, free
In an attempt to alleviate the Cold (War), an American congressman from Harlem sent jazz musicians as envoys of peace to the underside of the Iron Curtain. This photo exhibition at the Palace of Arts chronicles the effort, which began in 1955. Hungarians probably would have preferred US troops, but they were, of course, occupied elsewhere. Official website here.

Big. Happy. Woman. Church. (Concert)

Lompos Farkas Étterem [map], free
It seems to be the weekend of weird names, and this one is a cover for a pretty decent grrrl power ensemble. Definitely one of the next local bands I will meet. Myspace here.

Ganxsta Zolee és a Kartel (Concert)
Old Man's Pub, 21:00
OK, so I LOVE Ganxsta Zolee, though I have never seen him live. Mostly because he keeps his posse hostage in the Old Man's Pub. That shouldn't stop you, though - Zsa-zsa will definitely not be there. And at least it's not the Jam ...

Sunday in Budapest

''Shake down 1979, cool kids never had the time. On a live wire right up off the street, you and I should meet''...lyrics from egomaniac, grunge rock legend, Billy Corgan and his band of pumpkin smashers. At the high point of their career in the early 90's, Mr. Corgan wrote these lyrics for their best selling double album while indeed reminissing about a prior visit to the city where he and fellow band-mate, James Iha were relaxing in the Széchenyi baths...

Drágám, tévedtem, Propeller Band

Gödör Klub 7th February, 21:00, Free

Drágám, tévedtem
, roughly translated as 'Honey, I was wrong', a phrase you may be repeating if you might happen to stroll past and join the Sunday night entertainment, or have recently bought a dodgy pálinka (like that could ever happen..) These Gödör regulars are playing back to back with
alternative funk-rock trio, Propella Band. With 'Nincs mit mondanunk' and 'nem beszel' as a part of their song set list, it's not surprising they have a lot to say. Szuperkool.

Also worth a gander...

SzigorIgor (Concert)
Szabad az Á, 21:00
Currently embarking on traveling round Hungary, SzigorIgor are now strutting their musical stuff in Budapest this evening. This interesting alt/rock quartet released their first EP in 2009 and are hoping for success in 2010, and are well worth a listen.

Thea Soti Quartet (Concert)
iF Kávéház [map] 19:30
Intimate improv Jazz quartet, Thea Soti and co are playing relaxing world melodies for an easy, chilled out Sunday evening, just as the good lord intended it to be. The good lord also gave this band cool, groove-rate rhythms, with flirtatious intention.

Novák Csaba (Pianist)
Cafe Miro Grande [map]
Cafe Grande regular is again making an appearance to play the sweet sounds of piano. Nice venue along the Liszt Ferenc tér, advertising a cheap lunch menu Monday to Friday.

Hey you!

It's finally happened! Andy has left the building...

To be more precise, the final member of the original editorial team of the Hub, Andy Sz has decided to leave Budapest and move to France. So we now have an all new editorial team, struggling heroically to reach the heights of the illustrious founders.

We are still actively seeking more fresh blood and would love to hear from anyone who would like to write either regularly or occasionally. Whilst we intend to maintain the same basic concept, we are looking to improve and expand the site over the next few months, which will provide plenty of opportunities for you to test out and practice your writing skills. We are looking for help with the weekly listings and also reviewers, bloggers and anyone who has constructive suggestions to improve the site. We usually put together the listings every Wednesday afternoon and get together as a team, using laptops in a bar/café, followed by congratulatory drinks... If you fancy coming along to see how it all works, drop us a line at team@hubhungary.com
